Southwell Artspace hosts the popular touring show of David Hockney’s etchings illustrating the fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm.
Some of the tales are familiar, like Rapunzel and Rumpelstilzchen; others, such as Old Rinkrank, Fundevogel and The Little Sea Hare are little known. Hockney especially enjoyed the elements of magic in the tales, and the etchings focus on his imaginative response rather than recreating a story.
The works in this exhibition are among the 39 etchings drawn directly onto copper plates by Hockney between May and November 1969. Born in Bradford in 1937, Hockney is one of the most popular British artists today. Major exhibitions of his work have been held all over the world and include paintings, drawings, photography and stage designs.
