This exhibition is a response to the “fragility of family dynamics, feelings of desperation and the underlying threads of violence and danger that underpin out society”.
An exhibition of work by the Nottinghamshire artist, Cynthia Harrison will go on show at Southwell Artspace from Saturday 6th to Friday 19th September.
Included in the exhibition are mono prints influenced by the young people Harrison met during youth workshops, many of whom were refugees from Afghanistan or local children who had experienced domestic violence.
For the artist the emotions triggered by these concerns are expressed through her art, which she sees as a way of communicating her anguish about violence in society that is often impossible to convey in words.
When working I am looking for truth, a doing away with unnecessary and deceiving decoration, cutting through, taking away, leaving only what speaks to me.
The resulting work is not portraiture as such but depicts haunting ghost like figures that emerge from the artist’s unconscious and often provokes a range of responses in the the viewer.
Join us for the opening event of the exhibition on Saturday 6th September, 12noon to 2pm.
