Southwell Open Studios

Artspace Artists join the Southwell Artists group in opening their studios.

A chance to take a look inside the Artspace Studios, currently home to five resident artists, situated above our gallery. Also open were the studios of fourteen Southwell Artists.

Georgina Bell works in felt, embroidery and print to create work which is a storybook of memories, past and present, encouraging viewers to question their own identity and relationship to the places where they live, work and travel to. Glyn Brewerton’s charcoal drawings particularly reflect his own solitary journeys through the rural landscape. His aim is to capture the power and unromantic beauty of nature, and its influence on the people who live and work in these rural environments. Gemma Clewer makes ceramics and mixed media drawings using wildlife and abstract floral designs and is currently working on a series of drawings which forms the basis of the surface designs of her ceramics. Stuart Parkinson’s fine pencil and pen drawings are inspired by local scenes such as the annual Morris Dancing event and Southwell Minster, paying particular interest to the ‘characters of the town’. Debra Tatham is an artist interested in working with recycled materials making patchwork and rag rugs out of plastic bags and other discarded objects. Having been trained in ceramics, she also takes aspects of this forward into papier mache and gesso.

Artspace continues to provide exhibitions, events and activities for the local community, including Life Drawing sessions for Adults on Thursday evenings and Artspace Juniors our free Saturday morning art programme for children. Looking forward an exhibition of the Southwell Artists Group takes place at Southwell Artspace from Saturday 8 November to Friday 21 November.
