GPS Drawing Workshop with the Minster School, Southwell

Extending from Artspace’s exhibition of Digital Drawing pupils from the Minster School were given the opportunity to experiment with the very latest in drawing technology - Drawing with Satellites.

Exploring the new buildings and boundaries of their new school, two groups of pupils from the Minster School used GPS (Global Positioning System) devices to create an aerial map of their tracks. The sessions were led by artists Jeremy Wood and Hugh Pryor and gave pupils the opportunity to use their feet and the devices to draw pictures.

Many people think of drawing as putting pen to paper but the students from the Minster School were able to draw using their bodies and the latest in satellite technology. Most began by walking the perimeter of the building and the schools tracks and paths and then developed their own styles in drawing shapes and writing their names.

Pupil Pearl Boyden (15) said: “It was like walking around with a pencil behind you ... As we walked we could see on the handsets what shapes we were making”. The project involved the Geography as well as the Art Department who intend to invest in two of the GPS tracking devices in order to carry out similar exercises with further groups of pupils in future.
